Fun Friday Morning

Good Fun Friday Morning Everyone,

On this date in 490 BC the Greek runner Phillippides, ran from Marathon to Athens to inform the Athenians that the Greeks had defeated the Persian army. Just days before Phillippides had run 75 miles from Marathon to Sparta to ask for reinforcements against the Persians. When the Spartans said they couldn’t come until the end of the month, Phillippides ran back 75 miles to Marathon to tell his commander. When he arrived back in Marathon the battle was just beginning and Phillippides fought along side his fellow Athenians all day until they defeated the Persian Army. As soon as the victory was achieved his commander told Phillippides to run to Athens and tell the city the great news. Phillippides immediately set out on the 25 mile run to Athens. When he arrived he was so exhausted (from running to Sparta and back, battling the Persians, and then racing to Athens) that he collapsed and died after shouting “Rejoice, we conquer!” The legend of the effort of Phillippides lives on in the race named after the place where the battle took place, “Marathon.” Phillippides symbolizes the commitment, endurance, and willpower it takes to win. So the next time you think you had a rough day remember Phillippides.
